ChatGPT SEO Agency in Rwanda: How Businesses Get Found and Cited in ChatGPT

In short

ChatGPT SEO means making your business easy for ChatGPT to find, understand and cite when it answers a question. You can influence this by letting OpenAI's search crawler read your site, keeping your facts consistent, writing answer-first pages, earning trusted mentions and testing the same questions monthly. No agency controls ChatGPT, so be wary of anyone who guarantees a mention.

Updated October 2026.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the shorthand many businesses use for making sure ChatGPT can find, understand and cite them. When a buyer in Kigali asks ChatGPT for a hotel, an accountant or an agency, the answer is built from sources the system can reach and trust. ChatGPT SEO improves those sources and removes the barriers to reading them.

It is not a trick, and it is not separate from normal SEO. OpenAI publishes how its crawlers work on its bots documentation page.

What can you influence, and what can you not?

You can influenceYou cannot control
Whether OpenAI’s crawlers can read your public pagesWhich sources ChatGPT chooses for a given question
How clearly your site states who you are, what you sell and whereThe wording of the answer, which can vary between sessions
Consistency of your facts across your site and listingsWhether a particular answer includes you
Whether trusted sites mention you accuratelyWhen models and search features change
Your testing and measurementAnyone else’s ranking promise

Which OpenAI crawlers should you know?

According to OpenAI’s documentation, there are separate crawlers for separate jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results.
  • GPTBot is used to collect content that may help train OpenAI’s models.
  • ChatGPT-User is used when a person asks ChatGPT to visit a page.

If you want to be visible in ChatGPT search, do not block OAI-SearchBot. Whether to allow training crawlers is a business choice. Our guide to robots.txt, llms.txt and AI crawlers explains the options. Check OpenAI’s page for current names, because they can change.

How do you make your pages easy for ChatGPT to use?

  1. State what you do, for whom and where in the first two sentences of each service page.
  2. Use question headings that match how buyers ask, such as “How much does X cost in Kigali?” and answer them directly.
  3. Include facts that can be checked: prices or ranges, opening hours, address, languages, process steps.
  4. Link to sources for any claim that needs one.
  5. Keep one exact set of business facts across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  6. Use accurate schema markup and a fast mobile site.

How do you test it?

Write 15 to 20 real buyer questions, ask each in a fresh ChatGPT chat twice and record whether you are named, whether a page of yours is cited and whether the facts are correct. Our guide on checking whether AI assistants recommend your business gives the full method and a recording table.

What does ChatGPT look at when it searches the web?

OpenAI documents which crawler surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, but it does not publish a ranking formula. So treat the rest of this section as our working view, based on how web search generally works, and not as a statement from OpenAI. In practice, pages that match the question closely, state facts clearly, are easy to read and are backed by other trustworthy sources tend to be easier to use in an answer. That is why the checklist above focuses on access, clarity and consistency.

A ChatGPT test sheet you can copy

Open a fresh chat for each question, ask it twice and record what you see. Swap the words in brackets for your own business, service and neighbourhood.

Prompt typeExampleWhat to record
Category“Best [service] in Kigali”Are you named? In what position?
Location“[Service] near Kigali Convention Centre”Are you named for the right area?
Price“How much does [service] cost in Rwanda?”Which sources and figures are used? Are yours correct?
Language“[Service] in Kigali that speaks French”Are your languages mentioned?
Comparison“[Your brand] vs [competitor]”How are you described?
Brand“What do you know about [your brand]?”Is the description accurate and current?
Process“How does [service] work in Rwanda?”Is one of your pages cited?

Run 15 to 20 prompts across these types. Our guide to checking whether AI assistants recommend your business gives a recording table.

What should you do when ChatGPT gets you wrong?

  1. Find the likely source. Search the wrong detail. It often comes from an old directory, a social profile or an outdated page of yours.
  2. Fix it at the source. Correct your website, Google Business Profile and any listing that shows the wrong detail.
  3. Publish a clear page. A page stating the right fact, with the date, gives assistants a better source.
  4. Keep your robots.txt open to the crawlers you want, so updated pages can be read.
  5. Re-test later. Corrections take time to be picked up, so test again the following month and record the change.

You may also be able to report an inaccurate answer through the product, but fixing the underlying sources is more reliable.

Common ChatGPT SEO mistakes

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident.
  • Relying on a single test and a single answer.
  • Stuffing a page with the phrase “best in Kigali” instead of giving evidence.
  • Letting different listings say different things about you.
  • Paying for a guaranteed mention. Nobody can deliver it.

A page checklist for being quotable by ChatGPT

  1. The page answers one clear question or topic.
  2. The first two sentences state the answer.
  3. Facts are specific: names, numbers, places, times and prices.
  4. Details a customer would ask about are in text, not only in images or PDFs.
  5. The page shows when it was last updated.
  6. Your business name, address and phone appear on the site and match your profile.
  7. Important pages are linked from your menu or from related pages.
  8. The page loads fast on a phone.
  9. Claims link to a source where relevant.
  10. The page is not blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall.

What did our Kigali audit show about ChatGPT?

In our October 2026 audit, a small single-day snapshot, ChatGPT’s answers to specific hotel questions cited the hotels’ own pages and repeated details such as meeting-room capacities, a conference package price and an airport pickup arrangement, while a broad question about budget guesthouses showed only a booking platform as a visible citation. The practical lesson is to publish the specific facts as text on your own site, and keep third-party listings accurate too.

Does ranking well on Google mean ChatGPT will name you?

Not automatically. The two systems use different crawlers and different ways of choosing sources, and neither publishes a full formula. Strong pages that rank well are more likely to be found and trusted, which helps both, but you should test ChatGPT directly instead of assuming.

Keep information fresh

  • Review key pages every quarter and after any change in prices, hours or services.
  • Show a “last updated” date and mean it.
  • Remove pages for offers that have ended.
  • Re-test your key questions after big updates.

What does Vatam do about it?

We run the checklist above through our GEO service and report monthly through AI visibility tracking. We start with a free audit that includes a hand check of what ChatGPT says about you. We do not guarantee mentions, and we will tell you if a result looks like luck and not progress.

What do the sources say?

  • OpenAI says opting out of OAI-SearchBot means a site will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, though it may still appear as a navigational link, and that robots.txt updates can take about 24 hours to take effect (OpenAI: overview of its crawlers).
  • OpenAI also says each crawler setting is independent: you can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot.
  • Pew found that in U.S. Google searches with an AI summary, people clicked a result in 8% of visits compared with 15% without one (Pew Research Center (July 2025)). It concerns Google, not ChatGPT, but it shows why being named in the answer matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT SEO?

It is a popular name for optimizing your business so ChatGPT can find, understand and cite it. The practical work is the same as GEO: clear pages, consistent facts, accessible crawling and trusted mentions.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not through any guaranteed arrangement. Beware of anyone who sells a guaranteed mention. Visibility comes from the quality and clarity of what is available about your business.

Which OpenAI crawlers matter?

According to OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, GPTBot is used to collect content that may help train models and ChatGPT-User is used when a user asks ChatGPT to visit a page. You can allow some and block others in robots.txt.

Will allowing OAI-SearchBot guarantee that I appear?

No. Allowing it only means ChatGPT search can read your pages. Whether you are shown depends on whether your content is relevant, clear and trusted for the question.

How do I test whether ChatGPT knows my business?

Ask it the buyer questions your customers would ask, in a fresh chat, twice each, and record whether you are named, cited and described correctly. Repeat monthly.
