Brand & Entity

Brand and Entity Management for East African Businesses

In short

Brand and entity management makes sure Google and AI assistants recognise your business as one clear, consistent thing: the same name, description, address and profiles everywhere. Vatam audits and cleans up Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn and your site's markup for businesses in Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and pursues Wikipedia or Wikidata only where notability rules are met.

What is brand and entity management?

An entity is a business that search engines and AI assistants can identify as one distinct thing: a name, what it does, where it is, and who runs it. Entity management is the work of making that picture clear and consistent everywhere it appears.

When your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page, website, directory listings and social profiles all tell the same story, an AI assistant can describe you with confidence. When they disagree, it may hedge, mix you up with someone else, or leave you out.

Why does it matter more for East African businesses?

Many strong businesses here built their presence on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp first, then added a website later. That leaves the same company with several names, old phone numbers, half-finished listings and addresses described by landmark rather than street.

Rebrands add to this. The brand behind our LAGE Lightings case study was formerly Lights Architect, and in the Gemini check we published, the answer named it by the former name. A rename needs a deliberate clean-up so every source catches up.

MarketWhat we look for
Kigali, RwandaNames that appear in English, French and Kinyarwanda, and listings that differ between languages
Nairobi, KenyaMany similarly named firms, and the gap between a registered company name and the trading name
Kampala, UgandaMap pins and addresses that rely on landmarks and neighbourhoods, which confuse location signals
Dar es Salaam, TanzaniaSwahili and English versions of the same name, and mainland versus Zanzibar listings for operators with both

What do we do, step by step?

  1. Write the entity brief. One agreed business name, a short, medium and long description, categories, address format, phone, hours and the people behind the business.
  2. Audit every profile. Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, major directories, industry associations and the pages that already rank for your name.
  3. Fix and unify. Correct names, addresses and descriptions, merge or request removal of duplicates, and claim listings you have not yet claimed.
  4. Add structured data to your site. Organization or LocalBusiness schema markup, a clear About page, and links to your official profiles so machines can connect them.
  5. Assess Wikipedia and Wikidata honestly. We check whether you meet notability rules. If you do not, we say so and move on.
  6. Monitor. Listings drift, staff change and platforms overwrite data, so we recheck on a schedule.

A Kigali boutique hotel might discover three versions of its name across booking and map listings. A Dar es Salaam safari operator might find one listing for the mainland office and another for Zanzibar, each with a different phone number.

What do you receive and how do we measure it?

What we doWhat you getHow we measure
Entity briefA one-page reference your whole team can useConsistency across all audited profiles
Profile and directory clean-upA before and after log of each listingNumber of listings corrected, duplicates resolved
Schema and About pageMarkup that matches your brief, validatedValidation results and Search Console enhancement reports
Knowledge checkA written view on Wikipedia and Wikidata eligibilityWhether tracked AI answers describe you accurately

The last measure uses a fixed prompt panel. See AI visibility tracking and reporting for how we run it.

What about Wikipedia and Wikidata?

We only pursue them where your business meets the notability rules, and we never write promotional Wikipedia articles. Most small and mid-sized businesses will not qualify, and forcing it gets the page deleted and can damage your reputation.

Where there is genuine coverage in independent sources, we can advise on how to disclose your connection and propose neutral, sourced content through the proper channels. Earning that coverage is a job for digital PR.

What are the honest limits?

We do not control Google, directories or AI assistants. Platforms sometimes ignore correction requests or take weeks to update, and AI answers may keep an old description for a while. Some listings belong to third parties and can only be requested, not changed.

Where does it sit in the packages?

The AI Visibility Audit flags the inconsistencies. Entity clean-up then sits inside the Foundation build, a one-time project with a fixed scope agreed in writing, alongside technical fixes, schema markup and site structure. Because profiles drift, the monthly Growth retainer includes light entity upkeep.

It pairs naturally with local and multilingual SEO, and it is part of the wider GEO approach. For the case where a business has changed its name, see the Lens & Co rebuild, where a platform default title on the homepage was one of the first things fixed. Browse industries for sector examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is an entity in SEO and AI search?

An entity is a clearly identifiable thing, such as a business, person or place, that search engines and AI assistants can recognise and describe. For a business it means a consistent name, description, location and set of official profiles. The clearer that picture, the easier it is for AI to name you correctly.

Do I need a Wikipedia page for AI assistants to know my business?

No. Most businesses do not qualify and do not need one. A consistent Google Business Profile, a clear website and credible third-party mentions do most of the work. We only pursue Wikipedia or Wikidata where notability rules are genuinely met, and we never write promotional articles.

Why does my business show different names on different sites?

Usually because profiles were created at different times by different people, or after a rebrand, and no one reconciled them. Booking sites, directories and social pages each keep their own copy. We find every version, correct what we can and request changes on listings we do not control.

How long does entity clean-up take?

The initial audit and corrections for your main profiles usually take a few weeks, depending on how many listings exist and how quickly platforms respond. Some directories take longer to verify changes. We keep a log so you can see each correction and its status.

Can you remove a wrong or duplicate listing?

Sometimes. If you own or can claim the listing, we can edit or merge it. If it belongs to a third party, we can request a correction or removal through the platform's process, but the decision is theirs. We tell you plainly which are which.
