In short
Technical SEO for East African websites means making sure search engines and AI crawlers can load, read and index your pages quickly on mobile devices and variable networks. Vatam audits and fixes Core Web Vitals, crawl control, structured data, hosting and AI crawler access for sites in Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Why does technical SEO matter more in East Africa?
Because your customers are mostly on phones and network quality varies, a slow or heavy site loses visitors before it can persuade them. Google is also mobile-first, so it judges your site by how it loads on a phone, not on your office desktop.
A page that feels fine on fibre in Kigali can crawl on a mobile connection in a second-tier town. We test for the slower case, because that is often your real customer.
What do you check in a technical audit?
We check whether pages can be found, loaded, understood and trusted. The audit covers the areas below, and every issue comes ranked by likely impact so you fix the important ones first.
| Area | What we look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Core Web Vitals | Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, on mobile | Slow or jumpy pages lose visitors and can weaken rankings |
| Crawl and index control | robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical tags, noindex, duplicate and thin pages | Stops Google wasting time on junk and missing your best pages |
| Structured data | Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList | Helps search engines and AI tools understand each page |
| Site architecture | URL structure, internal links, orphan pages, redirects | Spreads authority and makes pages discoverable |
| Security and hygiene | HTTPS, broken links, redirect chains, 404s | Protects trust and crawl efficiency |
| AI crawler access | Rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended | Decides whether assistants can read you at all |
Google publishes target thresholds for Core Web Vitals, and we measure against those. The headline fix is usually the same: smaller images, fewer scripts, and less code running before the page appears.
How do hosting and CDN choices affect speed in the region?
Where your files are served from changes how fast your page starts loading. A site hosted far from East Africa adds delay on every request, and a content delivery network (CDN) caches your files closer to visitors to reduce it.
We help you compare options sensibly: shared hosting versus managed hosting, whether a CDN with nearby edge locations is worth it, and when image optimisation or caching will do more than a new host. We do not push a particular provider. We measure before and after, and recommend the cheapest change that moves the numbers.
What are the realities of WordPress, Shopify and WooCommerce?
Each platform has predictable problems, and most speed issues come from plugins, apps and oversized media, not the platform itself.
- WordPress: too many plugins, heavy page builders and unoptimised images. Fixes include a lean theme, caching, and removing what you do not use.
- WooCommerce: product pages with duplicate content, faceted URLs that bloat the index, and checkout scripts. We set canonical rules and clean up filters.
- Shopify: app scripts that slow every page, default titles left in place, and collection and product duplication. Many fixes sit in the theme and app list.
The Lens and Co case study is a WordPress and WooCommerce rebuild: unique titles and descriptions for 30 pages and about 125 products, schema, and a mobile PageSpeed score of 99 on the homepage, with Largest Contentful Paint at 2.0 seconds. The LAGE Lightings case study covers a Shopify store, which traded as Lights Architect during the work.
How do you handle site migrations?
Carefully, because a migration is the easiest moment to lose years of search visibility. Before anything changes we crawl the old site, map every old URL to its new home with 301 redirects, keep titles and content that already perform, and check Search Console straight after launch.
The common mistakes are launching with a “discourage search engines” setting still on, forgetting redirects, and changing URLs for no reason. A pre-launch checklist avoids all three.
Should I let AI crawlers read my site?
If you want to be named by AI assistants, usually yes. Many sites block them by accident through a security plugin, a CDN setting or an old robots.txt. We list which bots you currently allow, then set each one on purpose.
The main user agents are GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot (Perplexity) and the Google-Extended token, which controls whether Google uses your content for its Gemini models. Allowing them does not guarantee a mention, but blocking them removes the possibility. See how this fits into GEO.
What do we fix, and what do you get?
- A prioritised audit in plain language, with each issue marked high, medium or low impact.
- Fixes carried out on your site where we have access, or clear tickets for your developer.
- Before and after measurements for speed and indexing.
- Updated robots.txt, sitemap and structured data.
- Ongoing monitoring in Search Console, so new problems are caught early.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good page speed for a website in East Africa?
Aim for Google's published Core Web Vitals targets on mobile: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Test on a mid-range phone over a mobile connection, not on a fast office desktop.
Does hosting location affect SEO in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania or Rwanda?
Indirectly. Hosting does not give a direct ranking boost, but a server far from your visitors slows the page, and speed affects experience and Core Web Vitals. A CDN with nearby edge locations often solves most of the problem.
Should I block GPTBot and ClaudeBot in robots.txt?
Only if you have a reason to. If you want AI assistants to know about and recommend your business, blocking their crawlers works against you. Decide bot by bot, and check that no plugin or firewall is blocking them without your knowledge.
Is Shopify or WordPress better for SEO?
Both can rank well. The better choice depends on your team, products and budget. Shopify is quicker to run for stores, while WordPress with WooCommerce offers more control. Performance usually depends on how each is set up rather than which you pick.
Will moving to a new website hurt my rankings?
It can if redirects, titles and content are not handled carefully. With a URL map, 301 redirects, preserved page content and post-launch checks in Search Console, most migrations keep their visibility and often improve it.
