In short
Vatam helps hotels, lodges, tour operators and safari companies in East Africa get found and chosen when international travellers ask Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity where to stay and who to book. We fix entity clarity, structured data, answer pages and third-party sources, then measure enquiries and bookings from your own analytics.
What do travellers ask AI before choosing a lodge, hotel or tour operator?
Many international travellers now ask an AI assistant to build a shortlist before they ever open your website. They type a full sentence, receive a handful of names, and email only those. If your name is missing from that answer, you are missing from the comparison.
These are the kinds of prompts we test for a sector panel:
- “Best gorilla trekking operator in Rwanda for a family with teenagers”
- “Boutique hotel in Kigali with airport transfers and a quiet garden”
- “How far ahead should I book gorilla permits in Volcanoes National Park, and who can arrange them?”
- “Safari operator in Arusha that can combine a Serengeti trip with Zanzibar”
- “Is Kampala a good base for Bwindi gorilla trekking, and which lodges are nearby?”
- “Zanzibar lodge for a honeymoon: Stone Town or the north coast?”
Why does AI visibility matter for East African hospitality and tourism?
One booking is worth a lot, it is made months ahead, and it is made from another continent. The traveller cannot walk into your lobby or meet the guide first, so they lean on whatever source feels trustworthy and answers the question clearly.
Gorilla permits, migration timing and park logistics are the sort of detail travellers want settled before they pay a deposit. AI engines reward pages that state those facts plainly and agree with what other sources say about you. That is work you can do, and it also helps ordinary Google rankings.
What does Vatam fix for hotels, lodges and tour operators?
We work through the signals AI engines and search engines use to decide who to name. For a hospitality business that usually means:
- Entity clarity. One consistent description of who you are, where you are and what you offer, repeated identically on your site, Google Business Profile and listings.
- Structured data. LodgingBusiness for the property, TourOperator and TouristTrip for itineraries (duration, start and end point, what is included), FAQPage for booking questions, and Review markup only for genuine reviews.
- Answer pages. A permits and booking lead-time page, a month-by-month “when to go” guide, a “how many days do I need” page for each itinerary, and a plain page on cancellation and deposits.
- Third-party sources. Tourism board listings, travel press, partner operators and review platforms, checked so names, addresses and room or trip details match.
- Reviews. A simple process for collecting genuine guest reviews and showing them where engines can read them.
- Languages. English first, and where your guests come from, pages in French or other languages. See local and multilingual SEO.
- Local and maps. Google Business Profile categories, photos, attributes and Maps accuracy for each property or office.
| What AI looks for | What we check | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| A clear answer to “where should I stay?” | Property and room pages, location context, who the stay suits | Rewritten property pages with LodgingBusiness schema |
| A named, trusted operator | Operator entity, licences you hold, memberships, press mentions | Entity page and consistent listings |
| Trip detail it can quote | Itinerary length, inclusions, season, permit rules | TouristTrip pages and a permits guide |
| Agreement across sources | Site, Maps, directories, review platforms | A fix list of mismatches and gaps |
How do we measure whether it works?
We build a fixed panel of sector prompts like the ones above and run it monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. We record whether you are named, in what position, with which description, and which sources the engine cited.
Then we connect that to the business. Using your own analytics and Search Console, we track enquiry form submissions, WhatsApp clicks, booking requests and visits arriving from AI assistants. Nobody can promise an AI mention, so the report shows what moved and what did not.
Where do we work?
Vatam is based in Kigali and works remotely across the region. For tourism, that covers Rwanda (Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Akagera, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu), Uganda (Kampala, Entebbe, Bwindi), Kenya (Nairobi and the safari circuits) and Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam).
What proof do we have?
We have no published hospitality results yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can show is the method on high-consideration purchases: two Lagos retailers, LAGE Lightings and Lens & Co by Tiara, where buyers research carefully before spending. The same audit, entity, schema and content work applies to travellers.
How do you start?
Start with a free AI visibility audit. We check how you appear on Google, whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name you for your trips and rooms, how clear your entity and structured data are, and how you compare with the competitors travellers see. Request your audit and we will scope any further work only after you have seen the baseline.
Frequently asked questions
Can you guarantee my lodge will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. Nobody controls what ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity say, and anyone promising a guaranteed mention is guessing. What we do is measure your baseline, fix the signals these engines rely on, such as clear entity details, schema markup and consistent third-party listings, and report honestly each month.
Do you handle bookings or only visibility?
Only visibility and content. We help travellers find and trust you, then your own booking system, reservations team or WhatsApp takes over. We track enquiries and bookings from your analytics so you can see which pages and sources lead to real conversations.
Which structured data does a safari operator need?
Usually TourOperator for the company, TouristTrip for each itinerary, FAQPage for permit and payment questions, and Review markup only where reviews are genuine and visible on the page. Lodges add LodgingBusiness with rooms, amenities and check-in details. We choose types that match what is on each page.
Does it matter if my website is only in English?
English is the right starting point for most international travellers. If a large share of your guests are French-speaking, adding well-written French pages for your key trips and rooms can help. We recommend extra languages only where your audience justifies the effort.
How long before I see changes in AI answers?
Technical and listing fixes can be picked up within weeks, but AI answers change slowly and unevenly. We take a baseline in the first month, then track monthly. Expect a gradual trend in how often and how well you are named, not an overnight switch.
