In short
A good GEO (generative engine optimization) agency in Rwanda does five things: it makes your site readable to AI crawlers, states your business facts clearly and consistently, writes answer-first content, earns trusted mentions that assistants rely on, and measures monthly whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name you. It cannot guarantee a mention, because no one controls those assistants.
Updated October 2026.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of improving how often, and how accurately, AI assistants name and cite your business. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude for a recommendation, the assistant writes an answer from what it can find and trust. GEO makes sure it can find you, understand you and describe you correctly.
It is not a replacement for SEO. Assistants draw on the same open web, so strong fundamentals help both. Our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity shows the ordered checklist.
What should a GEO agency in Rwanda actually do?
| Workstream | What it involves | How you can check it |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl access | Make sure AI and search crawlers can read your public pages, with a correct robots.txt, sitemap and fast pages | Open /robots.txt and /llms.txt; test pages in Search Console |
| Entity facts | One exact set of name, address, phone, services and founders used on your site, Google Business Profile and directories | Search your business name; compare each listing |
| Answer-first content | Service pages and FAQs that state the answer in the first lines, with proof and sources | Read the first two sentences under each heading |
| Trusted mentions | A small number of relevant, earned mentions on sites assistants and Google already trust | List of mentions with links in your report |
| Measurement | A fixed prompt panel run monthly across assistants, with accuracy notes | Dated spreadsheet or report you can rerun yourself |
Why does Rwanda need its own approach?
- Several languages. Rwandan buyers search in English, French, Kiswahili and Kinyarwanda. Pages and facts need to exist in the languages that your customers use.
- Smaller local web. Fewer local sources means each accurate listing and mention carries more weight. Make sure the ones that exist are correct.
- Tourism and regional trade. Many Kigali businesses serve international visitors who ask assistants in English before they arrive. Your English facts must be as strong as your local ones.
What can GEO not do?
It cannot guarantee a mention, a position or a date. AI assistants vary their answers, differ by country and change as models update. Anyone who sells a guaranteed outcome is selling something they do not control. What a good agency can guarantee is a measured baseline, clear work and honest reporting.
What do the technical basics look like?
- Allow the crawlers you want visible to. See our guide to robots.txt, llms.txt and AI crawlers.
- Add accurate schema markup that matches the visible page.
- Keep pages fast on mobile. See our Core Web Vitals checklist.
How do AI assistants decide which businesses to mention?
The companies behind these assistants do not publish ranking formulas, so anyone who claims to know the exact recipe is guessing. What is documented is how the pieces fit together. An assistant answers from what its model learned during training and, for many questions, from pages it retrieves from the web at the moment you ask. OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic each describe separate crawlers for search, for user-requested fetches and for training (OpenAI crawler documentation, Perplexity crawler documentation, Anthropic crawler documentation).
For a local business, that gives three practical levers: (1) be reachable by the search-side crawlers, (2) have a page that directly matches the question, and (3) have the same facts confirmed by several independent places. That is the logic behind everything in this guide. It is our working model, not a statement from those companies.
Which AI crawlers exist, and which should you allow?
| Crawler | Operator | What the operator says it does | Typical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search results | Allow, if you want ChatGPT visibility |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects content that may help train models | Your business decision |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Acts when a user asks ChatGPT to visit a page | Not controlled by robots.txt in the same way |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search; not used for training | Allow, if you want Perplexity visibility |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Navigates the web to improve search result quality | Allow, if you want Claude visibility |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Collects web content for model training | Your business decision |
| Google-Extended | Controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding; it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search | Your business decision | |
| Googlebot | Crawls for Google Search, including AI features | Allow |
Details come from the OpenAI crawler documentation, Perplexity crawler documentation, Anthropic crawler documentation and Google crawler documentation. Always check them before editing, as names and behaviour can change. Perplexity notes that its user-initiated fetcher generally ignores robots.txt, so robots.txt does not control every request.
A visibility-focused robots.txt example
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
This only expresses the visibility choices. Whether to allow or block training crawlers is separate. OpenAI and Perplexity say changes can take about 24 hours to be picked up. Take care when editing: a wrong rule can block your whole site from search, so test after every change.
A monthly GEO scorecard you can copy
| Metric | How to measure | A healthy sign |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | Share of your test questions where the assistant names you | Rising over several months |
| Citation rate | Share of answers that link or cite one of your pages | Your best pages appear as sources |
| Accuracy | Are name, address, services and prices correct? | No wrong facts in repeated tests |
| Description quality | Does the assistant describe what you really do, in your words? | Matches your fact sheet |
| Competitor share | Who else is named for the same questions | You appear alongside, or ahead of, the usual names |
| Source pages | Which sites are cited for your questions | You can influence or appear on the main ones |
Record each metric by date, assistant and exact prompt. Single answers are noisy, so look at the trend over at least three months.
What does GEO look like inside a Vatam retainer?
The Growth retainer, at $650 a month, includes four answer-first articles or pages, a 25-prompt panel across five AI engines with two competitors compared, one digital PR round a month and review guidance, with a monthly report and call. The Starter plan, at $290 a month, covers a 10-prompt panel and two answer-first pieces. Retainers have a three-month minimum. See pricing for the detail.
Common GEO mistakes in Rwanda
- Blocking all bots by copying a robots.txt from another site.
- Hiding key facts in images or PDFs that machines read poorly.
- Different facts on every listing, such as three phone numbers or two spellings of the name.
- English only when buyers also search in French or Kiswahili.
- Publishing generic AI-written articles with no real expertise, sources or examples.
- Testing once and drawing conclusions from a single answer.
How does Vatam do GEO?
Our GEO service follows the table above and is measured every month by our AI visibility tracking. In our LAGE Lightings case study, ChatGPT listed the brand seventh in July 2026; by October ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all named it first. That is one client and one set of questions, but it shows how we record progress, including what is unfinished.
What does the research say?
The term comes from academic work. A 2023 paper by researchers including Pranjal Aggarwal and Karthik Narasimhan, accepted to KDD 2024, introduced “generative engine optimization” and a benchmark called GEO-bench. It reports that optimization methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, and it cautions that how well a method works varies by domain (GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024)). Two honest takeaways: the effect can be real, and it is not the same for every topic, so measure your own market instead of trusting a universal formula.
On the practical side, OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect and that you can allow its search crawler while disallowing its training crawler (OpenAI: overview of its crawlers). Google says that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode needs no extra requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible (Google Search Central: AI features and your website).

Frequently asked questions
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: improving how often and how accurately AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name and cite your business in their answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
Is GEO different from AEO?
The two overlap. AEO focuses on being the direct answer in search features such as snippets and voice results. GEO focuses on being named and cited in the answers generated by AI assistants. Both reward clear, factual, well-sourced pages.
Does GEO work for small Rwandan businesses?
Yes, in the sense that the same fundamentals apply to any size: clear pages, consistent facts and trusted mentions. A small business with a well-defined offer in one city can be easier to describe correctly than a large vague one.
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
If you want visibility, allow search-oriented crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Whether to allow training crawlers such as GPTBot is a separate choice. Read each company's own documentation before deciding.
How do I know GEO is working?
Run a fixed set of buyer questions through each assistant every month and record whether you are named, cited and described correctly. Look at the trend, not a single answer.
