In short
Review and reputation strategy is the ongoing work of earning genuine reviews, replying to them well and watching what customers say. Review volume, recency and sentiment feed Google and AI recommendations, especially for local and service businesses. Vatam builds the process for businesses in Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, never with fake or incentivised reviews.
Why do reviews affect AI recommendations?
Reviews are some of the most visible third-party evidence about a business, and Google and AI assistants read them. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a clinic, a hotel or a law firm, the volume, recency and tone of what past customers wrote shape which names come up.
This matters most for local and service businesses, where a buyer cannot test the product first. A steady stream of recent, specific reviews tells both people and machines that you are real and active.
How is review strategy different in East Africa?
Customers here are often happy to recommend you, but they are rarely asked, and the platform they would use may not be obvious to them. Many leave a rating on WhatsApp or Instagram where Google and AI assistants never see it.
| Business | Where reviews usually matter | What needs care |
|---|---|---|
| Kigali boutique hotel, Zanzibar lodge | Google Business Profile and major travel platforms | International guests use different platforms than local customers |
| Dar es Salaam or Arusha safari operator | Travel platforms, Google and the operator’s own site | Reviews arrive weeks after the trip, so timing matters |
| Nairobi or Kampala clinic | Google Business Profile | Patient privacy: replies must never confirm someone was a patient |
| Kampala or Nairobi law firm | Google Business Profile and professional directories | Client confidentiality and professional advertising rules |
Language matters too. A review request that reads naturally in Swahili, English or Kinyarwanda gets more replies than a stiff translation, and we write them in the language your customers use. Our local and multilingual SEO service covers the wider local picture.
What do we do, step by step?
- Audit your current reviews. Count, spread, recency, ratings, themes and how you have replied so far, compared with the competitors AI assistants name.
- Choose the right platforms. Usually Google Business Profile first, then the sector platforms your buyers actually check.
- Design the request. A short message and a direct link, sent at the moment the customer is most satisfied, by WhatsApp, email, SMS or a card at the counter.
- Write response templates. Calm, human replies for praise, complaints and mixed feedback, with guidance on what never to say in public.
- Set up monitoring. A simple routine so new reviews are spotted and answered quickly.
- Feed insights back. Recurring themes in reviews become content ideas and service fixes.
What do you receive and how do we measure it?
| What we do | What you get | How we measure |
|---|---|---|
| Review audit | A plain-English comparison with the competitors that AI assistants name | Review count, recency and rating against that peer set |
| Request process | Message templates in your customers’ languages and a simple workflow for your team | New genuine reviews per month |
| Response playbook | Templates and rules for public replies | Response rate and time to reply |
| Theme analysis | A short summary of what customers praise and criticise | Whether tracked AI answers mention you more often, shown in your monthly report |
What will we never do?
We never write fake reviews, buy reviews or offer rewards in exchange for them. We do not filter who gets asked based on how happy they seem, and we work within each platform’s rules, which are strict about this. A fake review can get your profile restricted, and customers can usually tell.
We also do not mark up reviews in ways Google’s guidelines do not permit, and we only use review markup for genuine reviews. See our notes on AEO for how structured data fits in.
What are the honest limits?
We cannot make customers leave reviews, and we cannot remove honest negative ones. Review volume builds slowly, and one request campaign will not change how AI assistants talk about you overnight. Some platforms are used more by international visitors than by local customers, so the mix will differ for each business.

Where does it sit in the packages?
The AI Visibility Audit shows where you stand against competitors. The Foundation build makes sure your Google Business Profile and entity details are correct first, which brand and entity management covers. Ongoing review requests, replies and monitoring then run inside the monthly Growth retainer, because reviews only work as a habit.
In the Lens & Co by Tiara case study, a store with about ten years in business began with no AI citations, a reminder that years of trading do not automatically show up online. See which sectors we cover on our industries page.
Frequently asked questions
Do online reviews really affect whether ChatGPT recommends my business?
They can. Reviews are third-party evidence that Google and AI assistants read when choosing which local or service businesses to name. Volume, recency and sentiment all contribute, though no one can say exactly how much. Reviews work best alongside a clear website and consistent business profiles.
Can I offer customers a discount for leaving a review?
No. Google and most platforms prohibit incentivised reviews, and a profile can be restricted or have reviews removed if caught. We help you ask every customer, genuinely and politely, with a direct link, and we never offer rewards in exchange for reviews.
How should I respond to a negative review?
Reply quickly, calmly and without arguing. Thank them, acknowledge the issue, and offer to continue the conversation offline. Never share private details. For clinics and law firms, do not even confirm the person was a client. A good reply is often read by prospective customers more than the review itself.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. What matters is that you look active and credible against the competitors AI assistants name, with a steady flow of recent, specific reviews. We benchmark you against that peer set in the audit and set a realistic monthly target rather than a generic one.
Can you delete bad reviews for me?
Not honest ones. We can help you report reviews that break a platform's policy, such as spam, fake or abusive content, but the platform decides. For genuine criticism, the right approach is a good reply and a fix to the underlying problem.
