Digital PR and Link Building in East Africa

In short

Digital PR and link building means earning mentions and links from publications, listicles, directories and review sites that Google and AI assistants already trust. Vatam does it for businesses in Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from Kigali, using real pitches and disclosed sponsorships only, with no guaranteed placements and no link schemes.

What is digital PR and link building?

Digital PR is the work of getting your business written about, quoted and linked to by sites your buyers already trust. Link building is the measurable part: a mention that carries a link back to your website.

It used to be mainly a Google ranking tactic. It now matters for a second reason. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews lean heavily on third-party sources when they decide which businesses to name, so what others say about you often counts for more than what you say about yourself. Our guide on getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity explains why.

How is digital PR different in East Africa?

The media landscape is smaller, more local and more relationship-driven than in the US or UK, so a mass email blast does very little. What works is knowing which outlets, newsletters, associations and directories each market actually reads, then giving an editor something useful and specific.

MarketSources worth pursuingAngle that tends to work
Kigali, RwandaRwandan business and tourism media, conference organisers, sector bodies, travel listingsExpert comment and local guides tied to Kigali’s events and tourism calendar
Nairobi, KenyaKenyan business and tech press, fintech newsletters, industry associationsExplainers on comparison topics and sharp opinion from a named expert
Kampala, UgandaUgandan business media, tourism associations, professional bodiesPractical local guides and commentary from practitioners
Dar es Salaam, TanzaniaTanzanian business media, safari and Zanzibar listings, Swahili-language outletsSwahili-first stories, plus English pieces for international readers

Many of the best targets are not news sites. A Zanzibar lodge may gain more from respected travel roundups than from a press article, because those are the pages AI assistants read when someone asks for a boutique hotel in Zanzibar.

What do we do, step by step?

  1. Map who is already cited. We check which sources Google and the AI assistants rely on for your category in each market, and which of them name your competitors but not you.
  2. Build a target list. Publications, listicle authors, associations, directories and partners that are realistic for your size, ranked by relevance rather than raw size.
  3. Create something worth citing. A pricing explainer, a local buyer’s guide, original commentary from your founder or a clinician, a data point you can stand behind.
  4. Pitch like an editor. Founder Victor Olanrewaju spent six years in editorial, with bylines at Benzinga, BeInCrypto, CCN, AMBCrypto and Coin Edition. Pitches are short and specific.
  5. Collect the easy wins. Unlinked brand mentions, partner and supplier pages, association memberships and credible directories.
  6. Log and review. Every placement is recorded with its URL, date, link type and disclosure status.

A Nairobi fintech, for example, might offer a named expert for money-transfer comparison roundups. A Kampala law firm might publish practical guidance for foreign investors and pitch it to business media and professional bodies.

What do you receive and how do we measure it?

You receive a source map, a target list, the assets we create, and a monthly log of everything secured. We measure it by what each mention does, not by how many we collect.

What we doWhat you getHow we measure
Source mappingA plain-English list of the sites that shape answers in your category, by marketShare of those sources that mention you, before and after
Pitching and outreachPitches sent, responses received, placements secured, all loggedPlacements by quality and relevance, not volume
Citable assetsGuides, comment pieces and data pages on your own siteLinks and mentions earned per asset
ReportingA monthly review in your reportSearch Console, referral traffic, and whether tracked AI answers begin to name or cite you

Tracking of the AI side is covered in AI visibility tracking and reporting.

What are the honest limits?

We cannot guarantee any placement, because editors decide, not us. We do not buy links, run link farms or use private blog networks. If a placement is sponsored, it is labelled as sponsored.

Mentions also take time to show up in rankings, and no one can promise that a new mention will change what ChatGPT or Gemini says. We can show you the mention, the link and the movement in the signals that follow.

Not sure which sources matter in your market? The free AI visibility audit shows who AI assistants name for your category and where your competitors are being mentioned.

Where does it sit in the packages?

The AI Visibility Audit is where the source gap first shows up. The Foundation build makes sure your site and entity signals are ready for a mention to land on. Digital PR then runs inside the monthly Growth retainer, alongside content marketing, because it needs steady work, not a single push.

It works best next to brand and entity management, so every mention points at a consistent, easy-to-verify business. See also GEO for how third-party sources feed AI answers.

On proof: our two published case studies are Lagos retailers. In the Lens & Co by Tiara case, the July 2026 baseline showed the store cited by none of the AI answers checked while four or more competitors were. That is the kind of gap a source map is built to explain. See the industries we cover.

Frequently asked questions

Do you buy links for digital PR?

No. We do not buy links, use link farms or run private blog networks, because those put your site at risk and do not build trust with people or AI assistants. If a placement is sponsored, it is clearly disclosed as sponsored. Every link we report is one an editor or site owner chose to publish.

Can you guarantee press coverage in Kenya or Rwanda?

No. Editors decide what they publish, and anyone guaranteeing coverage is either paying for it or guessing. What we do guarantee is the work: a researched target list, strong pitches, a clear log of every outreach and honest reporting on what was and was not secured.

Why do AI assistants care about links and mentions?

AI assistants draw on third-party pages such as articles, roundups, directories and review sites to decide which businesses to name. A mention on a trusted page is evidence about you that you did not write yourself. That is why earned mentions can move AI visibility, though no one controls the outcome.

How long does digital PR take to show results?

Expect the first placements within the first few months and the effect on rankings and AI answers to build slowly after that. Directory and partner links tend to land first, editorial coverage later. We report each placement as it happens, so you see progress before the larger signals move.

Is digital PR worth it for a small business?

Often yes, if it starts small. A boutique hotel or law firm can gain a lot from a handful of relevant roundups, association pages and local media mentions, which cost mostly effort. We prioritise by relevance to your buyers, not by the size of the publication.
