In short
Vatam is a SEO, AEO and GEO agency based in Kigali, Rwanda. We help hotels, real estate firms, professional services and tech companies get found in Google and named by AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini, across English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili search.
How does AI search optimization work in Kigali?
Search in Kigali happens in four languages, sometimes inside one household. A guest books a hotel in English, a civil servant checks a procedure in French, a neighbour looks for a plumber in Kinyarwanda, and a trader from the border towns types in Swahili.
Most SEO advice assumes one language and one very large market, but traditional SEO does not fully reflect multilingual Kigali search behaviour. Rwanda is small, multilingual and mostly on phones, and Google is where nearly all of it starts. That changes what a good website looks like. AI visibility also depends on semantic relevance, not just classic rankings.
A page that takes eight seconds to load on a mid-range Android over mobile data loses the visitor before the headline. That is why technical SEO and site speed come first on almost every Kigali project we scope, as a core part of search engine optimization for Kigali businesses and the technical optimization needed for AI search too.
Which Kigali sectors do we work with?
Any Kigali business that depends on being found by someone who has not met you yet. In practice that clusters in a few sectors, and each searches differently.
| Sector | How buyers search | What usually decides the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels, lodges, MICE | Compare venues and stays, often from abroad, often through an AI trip planner | Clear room, capacity and location details, reviews, a booking path that works on a phone |
| Real estate | Search by neighbourhood and budget, in English and Kinyarwanda | Fresh listings, consistent contact details, a visible agency name |
| Professional services | Law, accounting, consulting, architecture: look for a named firm | Named experts, proof of past work, a Google Business Profile that matches the website |
| Fintech and ICT | Partners and investors check who you are before they reply | Entity clarity, documentation, an About page that reads as real |
Rwanda’s public push to grow ICT and fintech means many young companies here, including some in B2B SaaS, sell to partners and investors abroad, not only to customers in Kigali, and many operate in investor-facing categories where digital marketing visibility shapes first impressions. For them the test is simple: does a stranger who searches the company name find one coherent story, because that credibility supports business growth through stronger organic traffic and brand perception?
What do AI assistants say when you ask for businesses in Kigali?
They give short lists through AI answers and AI-generated responses, and those lists are built from whatever the assistant can verify. Ask AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for a boutique hotel in Kigali or a reliable accountant, and the names that appear tend to be the ones whose details match across their own site, their Google Business Profile and a few outside pages.
Many Kigali businesses are thin on all three. The website has one page, the Business Profile carries an old phone number, and nothing outside explains what the company is good at. An assistant cannot recommend what it cannot confirm, because AI systems rely on verifiable signals, including consistent brand mentions on outside pages.
The answers also change between assistants and between runs, so nobody can promise you a mention. What we can do is test the prompts your customers use, measure AI visibility with AI citation tracking, record what comes back, and fix the gaps that get you skipped as part of AI optimization and a practical AI SEO strategy. That work is generative engine optimization.
What people actually ask
These are the kinds of queries, prompts, and target keywords we test for Kigali businesses. The wording shifts, but the intent stays steady. Many of these are natural language queries rather than short keyword strings.
- “boutique hotel in Kigali near the convention centre”
- “conference venue Kigali 200 people with parking”
- “inzu zo gukodesha Kigali” (houses for rent in Kigali, in Kinyarwanda)
- “cabinet d’avocats à Kigali” (law firm in Kigali, in French)
- “Which accountant in Kigali works with foreign-owned companies?” (typed into ChatGPT)
- “3 day Rwanda itinerary with gorilla trekking and a night in Kigali” (an AI trip-planning prompt)
Notice the mix of place names, a language switch and full sentences. The last two are not keyword searches at all, and that is where AEO and GEO earn their place.
What we do here as an AI SEO agency
We start with a free audit and build the foundation before writing anything, treating that groundwork as AI SEO services as much as SEO, which reflects an AI-first search approach for Kigali businesses. For Kigali that usually comes down to four jobs.
- Language structure. Deciding which pages need English, French or Kinyarwanda versions, and marking them up so Google serves the right one. See local and multilingual SEO.
- Answer-ready pages. Writing the pages that win featured snippets and AI Overviews, with content optimization for pages that can surface in AI-generated answers for questions like venue capacity or how a tenancy works. See answer engine optimization.
- Entity clarity. Making your name, address, services and people read the same everywhere, including Google Business Profile and schema markup with structured data implementation.
- Ranking work. The classic pages, titles and internal links that get you found in Google, supporting traditional search rankings and Google rankings while extending visibility beyond them into newer AI visibility. See our SEO work.
That mix of technical setup and content strategy is how the agency approaches AI-powered search visibility.
How do we work with Kigali businesses to improve AI visibility?
Vatam is founder-led and based in Kigali, so we can meet you in person when it helps and work remotely when it does not. A hotel manager in Kiyovu and a law firm in Kacyiru get the same four steps: audit and baseline, foundation, content and authority, then monthly tracking that includes AI-answer checks and AI search visibility tracking, with ongoing strategic guidance as the work evolves.
We do not guarantee a number one ranking or an AI mention, because nobody outside Google, OpenAI and the other platforms controls those, and AI models and generative AI systems change frequently. We guarantee a measured baseline, honest monthly reporting on search visibility and work that moves the signals.
On proof, our published results come from Lagos, not Kigali. LAGE Lightings (formerly Lights Architect) and Lens & Co by Tiara are trust-heavy local retailers that needed to be understood by search engines and AI assistants, which is the same problem a Kigali clinic or lodge has across traditional search and AI-driven discovery. They were not East African clients, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Start with the free audit. We check your Google visibility, whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name you, how you appear in Google AI Overviews, whether AI search citations are showing up, and your answer box appearances, along with what is holding you back. Send the audit form or write to victor@vatam.co.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Kinyarwanda version of my website?
Only if your customers search in Kinyarwanda. Property, retail, clinics and local services often do, while conference venues and international hotels rarely need it. We check real query behaviour in the audit, then add language versions only where they will be used, rather than translating every page by default.
Can SEO help a Kigali hotel get more international bookings?
Yes, but through two routes. Google visibility captures travellers who search by destination, and AI assistants now build itineraries that name specific lodges. Clear room details, consistent listings and answer-style pages on your own site help both. We do not promise a particular number of bookings.
Is Vatam really based in Kigali?
Yes. Vatam is founder-led and based in Kigali, Rwanda, and we can meet Kigali clients in person. We do not run offices in other countries. Kigali is home base, and we serve clients in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania remotely from here.
Does a Google Business Profile matter more than a website in Kigali?
Neither wins alone. For map and near-me searches the Business Profile often decides who is seen first, while the website supplies the detail that AI assistants and searchers read before choosing. Keep both accurate and matching, down to the phone number and opening hours.
How do I check whether AI assistants mention my Kigali business?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions a customer would, such as the best dentist or event venue in your area, and note who is named. Repeat on a different day, because answers change. The free audit runs this systematically and records the results as your baseline.
