In short
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and name in their answers. In Rwanda it comes down to six things: crawl access, one consistent set of business facts, answer-first pages in the languages your buyers use, evidence that can be checked, a few trusted mentions, and monthly testing. It improves your odds. It cannot guarantee a mention.

What is generative engine optimization?
A generative engine is a search tool that writes an answer instead of listing links: ChatGPT with search, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude are examples. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your business easy for those systems to find, understand and name.
The term was formalised in a 2023 paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), which proposed GEO and a benchmark for testing it. The authors report that some methods can lift visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, and they note that results differ across domains. Treat that as encouragement to test, not as a promise for your category.
How is GEO related to SEO and AEO?
| Discipline | Main goal | Typical win |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Rank pages in search results | Your page appears and gets the click |
| AEO | Be the direct answer to a specific question | Featured snippet, answer box, voice result |
| GEO | Be named and cited in a written AI answer | Assistant recommends you and links to your page |
All three share the same base: pages that crawlers can read, clear writing and facts that can be trusted. Our explainer on SEO vs AEO vs GEO goes deeper, and the companion guide on AEO in Rwanda covers the direct-answer side.
Six steps to GEO for a Rwandan business
1. Let the right crawlers in
If a crawler is blocked, the content is invisible to it. OpenAI lists separate crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, GPTBot for model training and ChatGPT-User for actions requested by a user, and says each can be set independently in robots.txt (OpenAI: overview of its crawlers). Read our guide to robots.txt, llms.txt and AI crawlers before you edit anything.
2. Fix one set of business facts
Write down your exact trading name, address, phone number, opening hours, services, languages and founders. Use the identical wording on your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings. Contradictions teach assistants to doubt you, or to repeat the wrong detail.
3. Write answer-first pages
Open every service page with a one- or two-sentence direct answer, then add detail. Use question headings that match how buyers ask. Our guide to writing FAQs that AI assistants can quote shows the format.
4. Show evidence
Prices or ranges, process steps, dated results and named sources give an assistant something concrete to quote. Link out to the original source when you cite a figure.
5. Earn a few trusted mentions
A relevant mention on a respected local or industry site does more than dozens of weak directory links. Think chambers, trade bodies, industry press and genuine partner pages.
6. Measure monthly
Run a fixed list of buyer questions through each assistant and record who is named. Our step-by-step method includes a table you can copy.
Why Rwanda is a good place to start
Rwanda has 5.01 million internet users, 34.2% of the population, and 13.0 million mobile connections according to DataReportal: Digital 2026 Rwanda, so most of your future buyers meet you on a phone. In a smaller market, each accurate listing and mention has more weight, and a business that is described clearly in several languages can stand out.
What should you not expect?
- A guaranteed mention or position. Answers vary between sessions and countries.
- Overnight results. Crawlers and models update on their own schedules; OpenAI itself notes robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to be picked up.
- A single trick. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible (Google Search Central: AI features and your website).
A 30-day GEO starter plan for a Rwandan business
| Week | What to do | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check crawl access (robots.txt, sitemap), search your name in Google and two assistants, write down your exact business facts | Baseline notes and a one-page fact sheet |
| 2 | Fix titles, descriptions and obvious technical errors; rewrite the first lines of your three most important service pages to answer directly | Three improved pages |
| 3 | Align Google Business Profile and your main directory listings with the fact sheet; ask recent customers for honest reviews | Consistent listings; review requests sent |
| 4 | Test 15 to 20 buyer questions in each assistant and record the results; choose the next three pages to write or fix | Baseline table and a ranked to-do list |
If you would rather have it done for you, a Foundation build covers the same ground with a fixed scope and price.
The business fact sheet: what to write down
| Field | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trading name | The exact spelling and any former names | AI engines must learn both names if you renamed |
| One-sentence description | What you are, where, for whom, in about 25 words | Gives assistants a clean sentence to reuse |
| Address and area | Street, neighbourhood, city, landmark | Local questions depend on place names |
| Phone and WhatsApp | The exact numbers with country code | Prevents mismatched contacts |
| Opening hours | Including holidays | Stale hours cause wrong answers |
| Services | A short list in plain words | Matches how buyers ask |
| Prices or ranges | With the date checked | An assistant cannot quote what it cannot find |
| Languages | English, French, Kiswahili, Kinyarwanda as applicable | Language questions are common |
| People | Founder or lead names and roles | Trust and entity clarity |
| Proof | Named clients or projects with dates, awards you can document | Evidence beats claims |
How to write the one-sentence description
Use this pattern: [Name] is a [type of business] in [neighbourhood, city] that [does what] for [whom]. A fictional example for illustration: “Example Stay is a 20-room boutique hotel in Kiyovu, Kigali, offering airport transfers and meeting rooms for business travellers.” Use the same sentence, or a close variant, on your website, Google Business Profile and social profiles.
What kinds of pages get used in answers?
- Definitions and explainers that open with a direct answer.
- Pricing pages that give a range and say what changes the price.
- How-to guides with numbered steps.
- Comparisons that are fair about trade-offs.
- Local pages that state the neighbourhood, access and what you offer there.
- FAQs that answer real questions in two or three sentences.
For one real example, our Lens & Co by Tiara case study describes a Lagos eyewear store, not a Rwandan one. After its pages were rebuilt to answer first and about 20 guides were published, Google’s AI Overviews named it and cited its guides for two buying queries, and ChatGPT and Claude now mention it, having named it in none of them in July 2026. The case study also lists what remains unfinished. It is one business and one market, so treat it as an illustration of the method, not a forecast for yours.
How to read AI mentions without fooling yourself
- Wording changes the answer. Test several phrasings of each question.
- Location and personalisation matter. Test from a device in Rwanda and, where possible, logged out.
- Answers drift. Record the date, assistant and exact prompt for every test.
- One mention is not a trend. Look at the share of questions where you appear over three months or more.
- Check the facts, not only the name. Being named with the wrong address is not a win.
Does GEO matter if my customers mostly come by WhatsApp or referral?
It can, because many referred customers still check a business before they message. If an assistant, a map listing or your website gives them a wrong or empty picture, some will go elsewhere. You do not need to chase every channel. Make sure the basics are correct and clear wherever a referred customer is likely to look.
GEO myths
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| “Add a magic file and AI will cite you” | A file such as llms.txt can help describe your site, but it does not guarantee citations. Clear pages and consistent facts matter more |
| “More pages means more mentions” | Useful, accurate pages help. Many thin pages can hurt, and Google warns about scaled content with no added value |
| “Pay for a mention” | No honest arrangement guarantees one |
| “GEO replaces SEO” | Both depend on pages that crawlers can read, users trust and sources confirm |
How Vatam can help
Our GEO service covers the six steps and our brand and entity management keeps your facts consistent. See the evidence in our LAGE Lightings case study, where ChatGPT ranked the brand seventh in July 2026 and ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all named it first by October. Frequently asked questions
What does generative engine optimization mean?
It means improving how often and how accurately AI systems that write answers, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, name and cite your business. The word generative refers to the answer being written from several sources, not listed as links.
Where does the term GEO come from?
It was introduced in a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, accepted to KDD 2024, which proposed GEO and a benchmark called GEO-bench. Today it is also used more loosely by the industry.
Is GEO a replacement for SEO?
No. AI assistants and search features rely heavily on the open web, so crawlable, fast, well-structured and trustworthy pages help both. GEO adds a focus on being named inside written answers.
What should a Rwandan business do first?
Check that crawlers can read your site, write down your exact business facts and make them identical everywhere, then test 15 to 20 real buyer questions in each assistant to set a baseline.
Can GEO guarantee that I appear in an AI answer?
No. Answers vary and the systems are not controlled by you or by any agency. GEO raises the odds by making you easier to find, understand and trust, and it lets you measure change.
