In short
SEO ranks your pages in Google, AEO makes you the direct answer in snippets and AI Overviews, and GEO gets ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to mention and cite you. For East African businesses, SEO is the foundation, and AEO and GEO are added in the order your buyers decide.
What are SEO, AEO and GEO in plain words?
SEO is how you rank in Google and Bing, so people searching in Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam or Kigali find your pages in the results list. AEO, answer engine optimization, is how you become the direct answer: the featured snippet, the Google AI Overview, the voice reply, the chatbot response. GEO, generative engine optimization, is how you get mentioned, cited and recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot.
The three are not rivals. They are three layers of the same job, which is being found and chosen by someone who has a question and some money. If you want the long version of each, see our pages on SEO, AEO and GEO.
How do SEO, AEO and GEO compare?
They differ most in where they show up and how you check whether they are working. The time ranges below are rough and vary with your site, your competition and how much you publish, so treat them as a planning guide and not a promise.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and earn clicks | Be the direct answer | Be named, cited and recommended |
| Where it shows up | Google and Bing results, Maps | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice, chatbot answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot |
| What you optimise | Site speed, structure, content, links, Google Business Profile | Answer-first pages, question headings, schema markup | Entity clarity, facts, third-party mentions, reviews, crawler access |
| How you measure | Search Console impressions, clicks, positions | Snippet and AI Overview presence for a fixed list of questions | A fixed prompt panel checked monthly: named or not, cited or not |
| Typical time to see movement | Often 3 to 6 months, longer in crowded topics | Often weeks to a few months after pages are restructured and indexed | Often a few months, and less predictable than the other two |
How do the three stack together?
SEO is the foundation, and AEO and GEO sit on top of it. AI answers draw on pages that search engines can already crawl, understand and trust, so a slow, thin or confusing site gets little help from AEO or GEO work done in isolation.
Think of it as a building. SEO is the structure: a fast site, clear pages, a verified Google Business Profile, content that matches what buyers type. AEO is how each page is written so that an answer can be lifted from it cleanly. GEO is the reputation layer: whether the rest of the web agrees with what you say about yourself.
That is why we start with technical health and entity clarity before chasing mentions. It is also why a good content programme pays off in all three at once: a well-built answer page can rank, win a snippet and get cited.
What does AEO look like on a real page?
It looks like a question as the heading, a direct answer in the first sentence, then the detail underneath. If your page asks “How long does a Kigali conference booking take to confirm?”, the first line should say how long, in plain numbers or terms you can stand behind, before any background.
That structure helps Google lift a snippet and helps an assistant quote you without rewriting. It also helps a human on a phone who wants the answer and nothing else. Add FAQ schema only where the questions and answers are genuinely on the page.
Which one does your business need first?
Almost every business needs SEO first, then adds AEO and GEO in the order that matches how its buyers decide. Here is how that plays out for five common East African businesses.
A Kigali boutique hotel
Start with SEO and your Google Business Profile, because most bookings begin with a search for a place to stay in Kigali. Then add GEO: travellers now ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a short list, and engines favour hotels with consistent details and plenty of third-party mentions. Pages in English and French help, and our Kigali page covers how we approach Rwanda.
A Nairobi SaaS company
Lead with SEO and AEO. Buyers search for comparisons and how-to questions, so answer-first pages for those questions can rank and be quoted. GEO follows quickly because software shortlists are exactly what people ask AI assistants for. See our Nairobi page for the market context.
A Kampala law firm
Lead with AEO and local SEO. People often phrase legal worries as questions, so clear, careful answer pages on a firm’s practice areas fit how they search. Trust signals matter more here than anywhere: named lawyers, real credentials and a clean Business Profile. Read more on Kampala.
A Dar safari operator
Lead with SEO and GEO together. Serengeti, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro trips are researched across many sites, and AI assistants summarise that research. Reviews, listings and press mentions decide who gets named, so third-party corroboration is half the work. Our Dar es Salaam page has more.
A local retailer
Start with local SEO: Google Business Profile, accurate hours, product and category pages that load fast on a phone. Add AEO for the questions customers actually ask before buying. GEO can wait until the basics are solid, though it is worth checking early. When Lens & Co by Tiara, a Lagos eyewear store, was audited in July 2026, no AI answers cited it while four or more competitors were. That gap is what the rebuild targeted, and by October 2026 Google’s AI Overviews were naming the store and citing its guides for two Lagos buying queries, with ChatGPT and Claude mentioning it too.
How do you measure each one without guessing?
Use a different yardstick for each layer, and keep it consistent month to month. For SEO, open Search Console and watch impressions, clicks and average position for your key pages. For AEO, keep a list of 20 or so buyer questions and note which ones show a snippet or AI Overview that names you.
For GEO, run a fixed prompt panel in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot, and record whether you are named, where, and whether your site is linked. Our monthly reports at Vatam include these AI-answer checks beside the Search Console numbers, because one without the other tells half the story.
One question, three different results
Take a fictional search: “best children’s dentist in Kigali”. The same question shows up differently in each layer:
| Layer | What the person sees | What the business needs |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | A list of links, with maps and listings, ranked by relevance and trust | Pages that Google can crawl and index, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, and a fast mobile site |
| AEO | A short answer or snippet, for example what to look for in a children’s dentist, with a source link | Pages that open with a direct, accurate answer under a question heading |
| GEO | A written recommendation from an assistant that names a few clinics and links its sources | Clear business facts, consistent listings, a page that matches the question and trusted mentions |
Most businesses need all three, but the work overlaps heavily: a fast, clear, well-structured page helps in every layer.
What does each layer measure?
| Layer | What to track | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Indexed pages, impressions, clicks, average position, Core Web Vitals, enquiries from organic search | Google Search Console and your analytics |
| AEO | Whether your pages appear as snippets or cited answers for target questions; impressions for question-style queries | Search Console queries and manual checks of your key questions |
| GEO | Share of test questions that name you, share that cite your pages, accuracy of the facts, who else is named | A fixed prompt panel tested monthly; see how to check whether AI assistants recommend your business |
Does AI search mean SEO is dead?
No, and the evidence points the other way. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary; pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). The foundations are the same ones SEO has always needed. What has changed is the click: Pew Research Center found that in a U.S. sample, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not (Pew Research Center: Google users and AI summaries (July 2025)). The U.S. study does not describe East Africa, but it explains why being named inside the answer now matters alongside ranking.
Which one should you do first?
| Your situation | Start with | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Local service business with a physical location | Google Business Profile, local SEO and accurate listings | Answer-first FAQs, then a monthly AI test |
| Online shop | Technical SEO, product and category pages, speed on mobile | Buying guides and answer-first pages, then AI tests |
| B2B or professional services | Service and industry pages, case studies, entity facts | Comparison and how-to-choose guides, then AI tests |
| New website | Crawlable, fast, consistent foundation and clear service pages | Everything else, once the foundation is indexed |
Questions people ask
Can I do AEO or GEO without SEO?
Not well. If your pages are not crawlable, indexed and fast, there is nothing for answer engines to read. Fix the base first.
Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
They overlap, but the goal differs. SEO aims to rank pages; GEO aims to have your business named and cited in written answers. Research on the subject describes GEO as its own optimization problem, and reports that results vary by domain (GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024)).
How long before I see a difference?
Technical fixes can be picked up within days or weeks. Rankings and AI answers change on the search engines’ schedules, so judge progress over months, using impressions in Search Console and your monthly AI test.
What mistakes do East African businesses make?
The most common mistake is buying GEO or AEO while the site underneath is slow, thin or inconsistent. Fix the foundation first or the rest has nothing to stand on.
The second is chasing a guarantee. Nobody controls Google or the AI assistants, so be wary of anyone who promises a number one ranking or a guaranteed ChatGPT mention. Good work moves the signals, and honest reporting shows you whether it did.
Third, many businesses ignore language and local context. Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan buyers search in English and Swahili, and Rwandan buyers in Kinyarwanda, English, French and Swahili, so local and multilingual SEO is part of the plan, not an extra.
Fourth, measuring only rankings. Rankings no longer tell the whole story when the first answer a buyer sees may come from an AI assistant. Track Search Console and a fixed set of AI prompts side by side.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
Yes, but they overlap heavily. SEO helps you rank in the results list, while AEO shapes pages so a search engine or assistant can lift a direct answer from them. Good AEO depends on solid SEO underneath, which is why most businesses do the two together.
Is GEO just SEO with a new name?
No. SEO targets rankings in Google and Bing, while GEO targets whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot mention and cite you. They share a foundation of clear, crawlable content, but GEO leans harder on entity consistency and third-party corroboration such as reviews and directories.
Can a small East African business afford all three?
You do not need all three at full strength. Most small businesses start with SEO and a clean Google Business Profile, then add answer-first pages, then check how AI assistants describe them. Scope to what your buyers actually do, and let a baseline audit show where the biggest gap is.
How long before I see results from SEO, AEO and GEO?
It varies. SEO often takes a few months to show movement, AEO can move sooner once pages are restructured and indexed, and GEO tends to be the least predictable. Anyone quoting an exact date is guessing, so ask what will be measured and when.
How do I know if ChatGPT or Gemini mentions my business?
Write ten to twenty questions your buyers really ask, run them in each assistant, and record whether you are named, in what position, and whether your site is linked. Repeat monthly with the same prompts. A fixed panel shows real change and filters out noise from one-off answers.
