In short
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring pages so a search engine or assistant can lift a clear, correct answer from them. The method: put the answer in the first one or two sentences under a question heading, support it with detail and a source, keep facts consistent and test the questions your buyers ask. Google chooses featured snippets automatically, so AEO improves your chances and guarantees nothing.

What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is shaping your pages so an answer engine can lift a clear, correct answer from them. Answer engines include Google’s featured snippets and AI features, voice assistants and chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. When someone in Kigali asks “How much does it cost to register a business in Rwanda?”, the engine looks for a page that states the answer plainly.
AEO sits next to SEO and GEO. For the differences, read SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
What does Google say about featured snippets?
Google states that its systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a search and, if so, elevate it, and that a site cannot mark itself for selection (Google: featured snippets). That is why honest AEO work focuses on clarity, relevance and helpfulness, not on tricks. Google’s Google: creating helpful, reliable, people-first content guidance describes the quality bar.
How to write an answer-first page
- Start from a real question. Use the words buyers use. Search suggestions, customer emails and WhatsApp messages are a good source.
- Put the question in a heading. Make it a heading, not a paragraph.
- Answer in the first one to three sentences. Name the thing, give the key fact, state any condition.
- Add detail below. Steps, a table, an example, costs, exceptions.
- Cite your source. Link to the official page you relied on.
- Date it. Say when the information was last checked.
Before and after
| Before (buried) | After (answer-first) |
|---|---|
| “At our hotel we pride ourselves on our service and we have many guests from around the world, and many of them ask about airport transfers, which we are happy to arrange.” | “Yes, we arrange airport transfers from Kigali International Airport. Book at least 24 hours ahead by WhatsApp or email, and tell us your flight number. Prices are listed below.” |
The right-hand version can be quoted as it stands. Only publish details that are true for your business.
Which formats work for which questions?
| Question type | Best format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What is X? | One-sentence definition, then context | “What is a Foundation build?” |
| How do I do X? | Numbered steps | “How do I add my hotel to Google Maps?” |
| X vs Y | Comparison table | “Agency or freelancer?” |
| How much? | Range with what affects it | “What does an SEO audit cost?” |
| Best X in Kigali | Criteria list with honest limits | “Best coworking space in Kigali” |
Do FAQ sections and FAQ schema still help?
FAQ sections help readers and give answer engines short question-and-answer pairs to extract. FAQ markup is different: Google says FAQ rich results are only shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and its FAQ structured data documentation has been removed (Google: FAQ structured data). So write FAQs for people first, keep the markup accurate, and do not promise a rich result.
How to test AEO
- Search the question in Google and note whether a snippet or AI answer appears and whose it is.
- Ask the same question in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and record who is named. Our testing guide has a table.
- Check Search Console for the query and your page’s impressions and clicks.
How do you find the questions your buyers really ask?
- Your own inbox and WhatsApp. Collect the questions customers ask before they buy. These are the highest-value prompts.
- Sales and phone calls. Ask your team which questions come up most.
- Google Search Console. Look at queries that start with how, what, why, can, cost, best or near.
- Google suggestions. Type the start of a question and note the completions and the “People also ask” boxes.
- Reviews, including competitors’. They reveal what buyers worry about.
- Staff and agents. Front desk, receptionists and drivers hear what customers wonder.
Group them by stage: awareness (“what is”), comparison (“which is best”, “X vs Y”), decision (“how much”, “how long”, “how to book”).
Page templates for the common answer types
| Type | Structure | Example heading |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | One-sentence definition, why it matters, an example, how it differs from a similar term | What is a service charge in Kigali hotels? |
| Steps | Short answer with the number of steps, numbered steps, what you need, common mistakes | How do I get a barcode for my products in Rwanda? |
| Price | A range, what changes the price, an example, what is included, how to get a quote | How much does a website cost in Kigali? |
| Comparison | A short verdict, a table, who each option suits, trade-offs | Freelancer or agency for SEO in Rwanda? |
| Local | The answer, the area, access, hours, contact | Where can I find a pharmacy open late in Kigali? |
Examples are illustrative; only publish answers that are true and sourced for your business. For longer questions, see how to write FAQs that AI assistants can quote.
A worked example: rewriting a service page
Imagine a fictional firm, “Example Accounting”, whose services page begins: “We are a dynamic, client-focused team passionate about numbers.” Compare it with an answer-first opening:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| “We are a dynamic, client-focused team passionate about numbers. Our professional approach has helped many clients over the years.” | “Example Accounting prepares monthly bookkeeping, VAT returns and annual accounts for small businesses in Kigali. Monthly packages start from [price] and are agreed in writing. We usually start within [number] working days of receiving your records.” |
After the opening, the page can add a short table of services and prices, a list of what clients need to provide, three or four questions with direct answers and a clear contact route. Replace every bracket with a real, checked fact, or leave the sentence out.
How do you know AEO is working?
- Search Console shows impressions rising for question-style queries.
- Your pages begin to appear as snippets or cited sources in the tests you record.
- Enquiries mention the information they read on your page.
- Time on page and conversions improve for the rewritten pages.
Be patient and compare like with like. Record a baseline before changing a page, then compare after at least a month.
What does AEO work cost?
On Vatam’s service menu, an answer-first article of 800 to 1,200 words with sources, an FAQ and schema costs $80, and a landing page with copy and a page build starts from $160. A Standard Foundation build at $850 includes five answer-first pages. Growth retainers include four answer-first articles or pages a month at $650.
Common AEO mistakes
- Writing the question as a heading and then not answering it for three paragraphs.
- Answering vaguely to avoid being wrong. Be specific, with conditions.
- Copying a competitor’s answer. It adds nothing.
- Marking up FAQs with schema that does not match visible text.
- Publishing an answer without a date or source.

Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can extract a clear, accurate answer to a specific question. It targets featured snippets, answer boxes, voice results and AI-written answers.
How does Google choose featured snippets?
Google says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a search and, if so, elevate it. You cannot mark a page to be selected, so the aim is to be clear, relevant and helpful.
Does FAQ schema still give rich results?
Google says FAQ rich results are only shown for well-known, authoritative government and health sites, and its FAQ documentation has since been removed. FAQs are still useful for readers and for answer extraction, but do not expect a rich result.
How long should an answer be?
A direct answer of one to three sentences, roughly 30 to 60 words, followed by detail works well. Treat it as a style guide, not a rule from Google.
Can an AEO agency guarantee a featured snippet?
No. Since selection is automated and varies, an honest agency promises a structured process and measurement instead of a guaranteed snippet.
